Jonathan Huffman (right) and Abby Perdu Bandor (foreground) spar, as they in the 5 and under class at the Coquille Martial Arts Invitational Summer Fun Tournamen compete On August 22nd, Coquille Martial Arts hosted a "summer fun" invitational tournament, inviting three other area martial arts schools. Attending the tour- nament were Henderson's Shorin Ryu and Empire Tang Soo Do, both from Empire and Reiss's East West from Coos Bay. A total of 29 competitors, ranging in age from 5 to 51 :partici- pated, about half the normal attendance for their open tournament. The next Fall open tournament will be held in November in Coquille. A concession stand was provided by the Coquille Art and Educational Enhancement Center, which shares the for- mer Barrow Drug building with the martial arts school, as a fund raiser for their proposed dance floor. After the tournament, the school also hosted a 4 hour systema workshop taught by Mr. Lowes of Eugene. Systema is a Russian Martial art that focuses on breathing, posture, move- ment and relaxation.
